GPI stands for the Global Peace Index. It measures the relative peacefulness of countries. The GPI’s most recent update, for 2023 ranked 163 countries and territories for their peace levels. This included 99.7% of the world population. GPI has shown an increase in violence worldwide over the past decade.
The IEP Institute for Economics and Peace drafted and published this GPI report. The final ranking and report are created by a highly respected international panel of peace experts.
These experts are from peace think tanks, institutes and other institutions to work with the data collected and compiled by Economist Intelligence Unit. The index was first launched in 2009. The reports are now released annually. In the first year, only 121 countries were compared.
How does the GPI work?
GPI measures the level of peace in a country based on its national and regional scale. It considers the level of harmony in a country and its level discord.
Ten different indicators are used to evaluate the safety and security of a society. The assumption is that less terrorist acts, lower crimes rates, fewer violent protests, stable political systems, good relations between neighboring countries, and a small number of displaced people will all indicate a peaceful country.
By 2023, the index will include 23 indicators to calculate the peace score for all countries and territories. Each year, these indicators are reviewed by the expert panel. Each indicator is given a score between one and five.
