The authorities in Venice have announced a pilot program that will charge for day visitors.
Entry fees are intended to reduce crowds, encourage longer stays and improve the standard of living in local communities.
When will visitors be charged for admission to Venice?
The city will charge visitors EUR5 for entry.
The fee will be charged between April and mid July for a total 29 days, including weekends with high traffic and other days.
There will be an additional day-tripper charge during the peak hours from 8:30am to 4:00pm. Visitors who are coming to Venice to attend a concert or dinner will not have to pay.
Who is required to buy a ticket for Venice?
Day-tripper tourists, including locals and visitors from Venetian origin, as well as workers, students, and travelers with hotel or other accommodation reservations, are not subject to the day-tripper tax.
How do I book a ticket to Venice?
From January 16, visitors can book their day in Venice on this platform.
Visitors will receive a QR Code after paying EUR5, which must be scanned in seven locations around the city including the main station to gain access.
A QR code is also given to the visitor when they enter their hotel. The cost of a Venice accommodation charge is already included in the hotel bill.
Venice’s sustainable tourism:
Venice is trying to rethink its relationship with tourists in a more sustainable way since COVID-19’s lockdowns destroyed the tourism industry.
The city has been forced to take action by the constant migration of Venetians on the mainland.
UNESCO’s pressure and that of environmentalists forced authorities to ban large cruise ships from passing the Giudecca Canal.
Venice has identified longer-staying visitors as being essential for its survival. They typically spend more.
