The beautiful turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean are now brown due to an influx of seaweed.
In the first three months of 2024, the seaweed condition in Mexico was very positive. The previous seaweed season had seen a significant decrease in sargassum, but this changed on April 6th. Our journalists and travelers in the Mexican Caribbean began uploading photos of sargassum to our seaweed reporting Facebook group . This seems to indicate a significant increase in sargassum on popular beaches such as Playa del Carmen.
Video Our journalist recorded this video on April 6, showing the arrival of the first guests on Coco Beach in Playa del Carmen, which was clean and pristine the day before.
Brendan H. complained on April 8 about how the beaches of Mexico had changed over the past 20 years. “My wife, and I, have vacationed in Playa since we were children. Sargassum destroyed it. “So sad!”
“Last year I went to Playacar, the beach was sargassum-filled. The hotel hired a tractor and drove it back and forth for the entire day. It didn’t do much. “Climate change in action”, said Simon R. on April 9.
