The Mexican Caribbean experienced a surge in tourism over the Easter weekend as more than 1.2 million tourists visited the state.
Officials estimate that 1,266,373 tourists are expected to spend Easter in the state, which is an increase of 4.2 percent from the same period in 2023.
The government increased security measures to protect tourists due to the large number of people traveling during the holiday season. More than 2,000 SSC members and other surveillance measures were implemented to ensure that tourists could travel more safely to the beautiful beaches in the area.
Three levels of government have worked together over the weekend, and until April 7, 2020, to install three service modules on North, Central, and Media Luna Beaches, in order to respond to any incidents reported.
The government has announced the Civil Protection Hotline 99 88770106 is available 24/7 for any emergency or unforeseen situation.
The news will help to boost tourism to the newly opened Tulum International Airport, which has seen its direct flights to the United States. The airport was designed to handle more that 5.5 million passengers per year.
American Airlines began flying to Tulum from Atlanta on March 28th, 2024. United Airlines began flying to Tulum on March 31, 2024.
JetBlue is also planning to begin direct flights to Tulum in June. Other international carriers, such as Air Canada from Toronto and Montreal, Discover Airlines from Frankfurt and Copa Airlines of Panama are also planning to launch operations to Tulum within the next few weeks.
