The Denpasar Center for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics has issued an Early Warning for Extreme Weather across most of Bali.
The alert includes popular tourist destinations like Denpasar and Gianyar. Cahyo nugroho, spokesperson for BBMKG stated that “the general public, as well as fishermen and those engaged in marine tourism, should be aware of high sea waves, which could reach up to 2 meters in the waters south Bali.”
Tragic incidents highlight dangers
Two tragic incidents in Indonesian oceans involving tourists prompted the warnings.
Gunther Kitzler, a renowned surfer from East Java who was 61 years old at the time of his death, died after he was swept into the sea by a rip tide on Seminyak’s Double Six Beach.
These events highlight the importance of following weather warnings, and being cautious when participating in water sports.
Bali Aims to Break Records in Tourist Numbers Despite Challenges
Bali is optimistic that it will achieve its goal to attract 7 millions foreign tourists by 2024 as part of Indonesia’s overall target of 14. million visitors. Tjok bagus pemayun, the head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office emphasized that Bali remains a popular destination for foreign visitors and hopes to see an increase in tourists in 2024.
Bali is still facing challenges, such as geopolitical instability and overtourism. The province responded by implementing measures such as a tourism tax, and a list of “dos and don’ts”, to control unruly behaviors and promote sustainable travel.
